Caring for Children
Born in South Korea and abandoned by her American G.I. father at an early age, Amber Dubé is a 39-year-old woman who volunteers once a week with her teenage children and husband. They provide childcare and serve as companions to children at My Sister’s Place, a women’s shelter in Hartford, CT.

The Tutor
Dwayne Bethea, a 46-year-old business analyst who grew up in poverty, now volunteers as a tutor at St. Luke’s LifeWorks, a homeless shelter in Stamford, CT, and reads to a blind woman in a nursing home. Through community service, he has redefined himself as an individual and developed a new value system… which has since helped him cope after being laid off from his job.

The Hospice Visitor and Teen Recruiter
Inspired by visits to his grandmother at the Richard L. Rosenthal Hospice Residence, Jeff Rich, a Stamford High School student, now volunteers there every Sunday. And, he has organized a team of 10 other teen volunteers who undergo training and commit to four hours of community service a month.
