Outdoor Enthusiast

The Outdoor Enthusiast is a CPBN Media Lab online project that takes viewers on location with personal travelogues and profiles.  Go behind the scenes of our national parks with Hannah's Home Videos, from lab staff member Hannah Woodward to get a sense of what you would see and experience.  And, closer to home, the Media Lab has created profiles of Connecticut's most remarkable state parks and scenic locations, including Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Silver Sands State Park in Milford, Sherwood Island State Park in Westport, the Metacomet trail to East Peak in Meriden, Kent Falls in Kent and The Last Green Valley, a designated National Historic Corridor shared by Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Many thanks to John Cimochowski, Assistant Director, CT DEP, Dennis Schain and all the DEP personnel, Bill Novoa and Ed Richardson from the Appalachian Mountain Club, historian Gilbert Spencer, author Christine Woodside, William Reid and Michelle Bourgeois from The Last Green Valley and Jean Pillo from the Eastern Connecticut Conservation District.

Holcomb Farm

A few years ago when my family became members at Holcomb Farm we discovered a new vocabulary of vegetables: rutabaga, kohlrabi, swiss chard. Each week we took home not just a share of vegetables but a lesson plan. We learned about beets' edible greens, what time of year to expect arugula, and...

Wickham Park

The scenic views, the history and the activities that Wickham Park offers is an experience no one will soon forget. On a warm day in July, Park Director Jeff Maron showcased the non-profit park to the Media Lab beginning at the park’s newest addition, the Sensory Garden. The sights, sounds and...

About National Parks: America's Best Idea
Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m., starting January 27, 2010.
Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature's most spectacular locales — from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska — THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA'S BEST IDEA is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background — rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy. It is a story full of struggle and conflict, high ideals and crass opportunism, stirring adventure and enduring inspiration - set against the most breathtaking backdrops imaginable.

THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA'S BEST IDEA is a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan.
